Advises President of the United States, Secretary of Defense, Homeland Security Council and National Security Council on military matters. Composition is defined by statute, consists of: Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Vice Chairman, and Military Service Chiefs from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force, and Chief of the National Guard Bureau, all of whom are appointed by the President, following Senate confirmation. Each Military Service Chief also works directly for the Secretary of the Military Department concerned.
